A note on Memorial Day

A note on Memorial Day

Dusty Tidwell

As a veteran, Memorial Day holds a unique significance for me. While I may not have experienced the same loss as those who served in combat, I deeply understand and appreciate the importance of honoring our fallen heroes.

This is a time to reflect on the bravery and selflessness of those who have given their lives in service to our nation. A day to remember their courage and dedication, and the sacrifices they made to protect the values and freedoms we enjoy today.

I had the privilege of serving my country, contributing to its defense and upholding its values. Though my personal experiences may not include the intensity and trauma of war, I still understand the commitment, discipline, and sacrifices required in military service. I have experienced the camaraderie and bonds forged among service members and I deeply respect and admire the unwavering devotion of those who defend us.

Today I join my fellow veterans in paying tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, acknowledging the impact their service has had on our nation's history and freedoms. Today is a day to express gratitude for those sacrifices.

I understand the responsibility that comes with the title of "veteran." It is a responsibility to uphold the values and ideals that our fallen comrades fought to protect. It is a responsibility to advocate for the well-being and support of our active-duty military members and veterans. It is a responsibility to ensure that their service is recognized and appreciated.

I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on fallen heroes. To remember their dedication and honor their memory. To commit ourselves to the principles they fought to uphold. To support, uplift, and offer our gratitude for their past service and support them in their future challenges.

In this way, we can ensure that the sacrifices of fallen heroes are never forgotten and their legacies continue to inspire and guide us as we strive for a better future for our nation and anyone who chooses to call it home.
